LAWTON, Iowa — Bernard R. "Bernie" Washburn, 75, of Lawton died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at the Embassy Rehab. and Care Center in Sergeant Bluff following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Lawton, with the Rev. Bruce Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home in Sioux City.

Mr. Washburn was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Hornick, Iowa, the son of Jesse and Elsie (McKnight) Washburn. He was raised on farms in Woodbury and Plymouth County. He received his GED from Western Iowa Tech Community College in 1973. He farmed for his father for several year He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947, stationed on Luzon, Phillipine Islands. Following his discharge, he continued to farm for his father. He was also employed with Harrison Implement in Sioux City.

He married Loraine Harrison on April 21, 1949, in Sioux City. The couple moved to Lawton in 1957. He worked as a farm hand, with Armour and Co. until it's closing, as the custodian at Lawton-Bronson School for five years and as a icing mixer for Interbake Foods, retiring in 1987 after 22 years.

He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed. He served as usher, trustee, treasurer and elder at Bethel Lutheran Church. He was a member of Bethelite Society, Young At Heart Club, Dancing Grannies and Grandpa's of Lawton and assisted the Great Grannies Rhythym Band. He enjoyed woodworking, square dancing and carpentry

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Nernan and Cathy of rural Hinton, Iowa; three sisters, Marian and her husband, Don Harrison, of Lawton, Alta Maron of Black Hawk, S.D., and Eva and her husband, Virgil Weigel, of Sergeant Bluff; two brothers and their wives, Jesse and Lavonne of Sioux City and Lowell and Franziska of Lawton; two granddaughters, Tricia Powell and Lori Pritt; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Wilma Pierick.

Pallbearers will be Kim Sparr, Mort Zenor, Keith Baker, Dan, Grau, Terry Johnson and Wayne Mead.
