SMITHLAND, Iowa — James D. Fox, 70, of Smithland died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at his residence, following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Smithland, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery, Holly Springs, Iowa, with military rites conducted by 55th Wing of Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha. Visitation with family present will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service and a Masonic service at 7 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home in Sloan, Iowa.

Mr. Fox was born Feb. 12, 1930, in McPherson, Kan., the son of Charles J. and Ethel (Johnson) Fox. He was raised in Concordia, Kan. and graduated from Concordia High School in 1948.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force from 1948 until retiring in 1971. He was an investigator with the Office 44 Special Investigation. His awards and decorations include the Medal of Commendation.

He married Lucille A. Doyen June 25, 1950, in Concordia. She died Sept. 7, 1993, in Onawa, Iowa.

He was employed as a Woodbury County Deputy Sheriff from 1971 to 1983. He received the Medal of Valor from the Woodbury County Sheriff's Department. He served as a United States Marshall and then as a court security officer at the Federal Courthouse in Sioux City.

He married Kay Crichton March 16, 1990.

He was a member of Rapid City Masonic Lodge 25 in South Dakota and Sioux City Scottish Rite Bodies. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and wood crafts.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, David J. and Evelyn Fox of Sergeant Bluff, and Michael J. and Kathy Fox of Rapid City; two daughters and their husbands, Deborah C. and Todd Sulsberger of Hornick, Iowa, and Sonya M. and John Hellmann of Tabor, S.D.; a stepson and his wife, Curtis and Laurie Crichton of Hornick; a stepdaughter Shelita J. Crichton of Westerly. R.I.; 10 grandchildren, Amy Benton, James, Nichole, Kristy. Bradley and Kara Fox, Corey, Miranda and Nathan Hellmann and Walter Sulsberger; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Sonia; and an infant granddaughter, Cherish Fox.
