1916-2000

Anthon, Iowa - Emma Schmidt of Anthon, Iowa died Tuesday, February 22, 2000 at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa at the age of 83 years, 5 months and 16 days.

A prayer service was held on Friday, February 25 followed by a service by the American Legion Auxiliary McNiff Unit #389 at Armstrong Chapel in Anthon. Services were held on Saturday, February 26, at United Methodist Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Kent Kastier officiating. Roger Hladik sang "Hymn of Promise, and the congregation sang "In the Garden" and "Amazing Grace. Mary Jo Lyon accompanied on the organ. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery at Anthon.

Pallbearers were Emma's grandsons, David, Russell, Dennis, Brian, Robert and Scott Schmidt. Honorary pallbearers were Emma's friends and family.

Emma Katherine Schmidt was born September 6, 1916, in Morgan Township, Woodbury County, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence Martin and Fannie Louise (Clausen) Hansen. On May 19, 1932, she was united in marriage to William Frederick Schmidt in Anthon, Iowa. He died April 24, 1946. Emma entered Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa, in November of 1999.

She belonged to the United Methodist Church in Anthon and was a 54 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary McNiff Unit #389 of Anthon.

Emma was employed as a cook for the Anthon-Oto School system for 27 years, retiring in 1982. She enjoyed her family and friends playing cards, bingo and her yard. She also did crafts of many kinds. Emma volunteered her time to the American Legion Auxiliary poppy fund raiser, where she had top sales.

Survivors include four sons and their wives, Norman and Leona of Danbury, Iowa; Darwin and Betty of Early, Iowa, Kenneth and Betty of Battle Creek, Iowa: and Darrell and Marge of Anthon, Iowa; 14 grandchildren: 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren: a brother and his wife, Tom and Sylvia Hansen of Hinton, Iowa; five sisters, Margaret Callamore of Tacoma, Washington; Thressia Klein and her husband, Art of Moville, Iowa; Rose Lillie of Correctionville, Iowa; and Dorothy Nelson and Darlene Jensen, both of Anthon, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Chris Schmidt of Rainier, Oregon; and a sister-in-law, Edna Bush of Rainier, Oregon: along with many other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

Along with her husband, Emma was preceded in death by a son, Gayland Junior; two infant daughters, Martha Ann and Mary Elizabeth; a sister, Marie; and two brothers, Peter and John.
