ANTHON, Iowa — Albert W. Stender, 94, of Anthon died Monday April 3, 2000 at a Sioux City care facility.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Michael Harman officiating. Burial will he in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Mr. Slender was born May 23, 1905, near Schleswig, Iowa, the son of Herman Ernest and Johanna Christine (Hauschildt) Stender. He moved with his family to a farm near Oto, Iowa in 1912. He attended rural school in the Oto area and one year at Oto High School. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

He married Kiista N. Schrunk on Sept. 11, 1933, in Sioux City. He ran Stender Trucking Service until 1947. He then worked at Tractor Ford Garage and was the Anthon School custodian and school bus driver until 1954.

They moved to Bellevue, Neb. in 1957, where he was employed at Offutt Air Force Base with the SAC underground headquarters. They entered Countryside Retirement Home in Sioux City in 1995. His wife died Oct. 17, 1998.

He belonged to Explorers at Bellevue and enjoyed traveling, woodworking and making clocks.

Survivors include a daughter, Selma Mills of Anthon: a daughter-in-law, JoAnn Stender of McMinnville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Lori Jo Stender, Vickie Lynn Hackley, Tracy Ann Ryan, Michael John Slender and Sherri Mills: and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, John William, a son-in-law,William Mills; and three sisters, Bertha Pleon, Mary Kuhlman and Erna Stender.
