SIOUX CITY | Maureen Deaton Hughes, 54, of rural Sioux City passed away from natural causes Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at her home.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Per Maureen’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Maureen was born on Sept. 9, 1958, in Sioux City, the daughter of Jack L. and Sally (Lennon) Deaton. She attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School where she won best actress trophy in the eighth grade production of Get Smart, where she played the part of Agent 99. Maureen was an honor student and graduated from Bishop Heelan High School in 1976.

On May 25, 1984, she married James R. Hughes. Maureen worked at Mercy Medical Center for the past 34 years during which time she attended radiology school and later earned her bachelor of science degree from Bellevue University, graduating summa cum laude. As a technologist, she became the supervisor of nuclear medicine, ultrasound and CT. She was also appointed the radiation safety officer for Mercy Medical Center. She was the first non-physician radiation safety officer in the state of Iowa. She was recently promoted to manager of her departments.

Maureen was a member of the Society of Nuclear Medicine. Maureen loved animals, especially her dogs. In earlier years, she enjoyed horseback riding and gardening.

Survivors include her husband, Jim; her mother, Sally Deaton of Sioux City; three brothers and their wives, Larry L. and Beth Deaton of Mapleton, Iowa, and their son, Jason Jack, Greg and Peggy Deaton of Sioux City and Peggy’s children, Amanda, Brian, Elaine and William, and Jon and Barb Deaton of Sioux City and their children, Brendan, McKenna and Caden Jack; aunts and uncles, Mike Lennon, Kathy Lennon, Eileen and Charlie Prochelo, Bob and Dee Lennon, all of Sioux City, Roy and Ginny Wynn of Colorado, Judy Deaton of Massachusetts, Clara Deaton of Michigan, and Carol Spade of Massachusetts; and many cherished cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jack Deaton; a stepdaughter, Jessica Hughes; and an uncle, Dick Lennon.

Memorials may be made in her name to the Mercy Foundation/Spirit of Mercy.

She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and the Mercy Radiology Department.
