Alvin E. Granite, Esq, 82, longtime Woodbury and Gloucester County attorney, passed on July 14, 2010 in his home.

Legacy

Alvin Granite lived a great American life – accomplished attorney, entrepreneur, world traveler, music lover, devoted to his family.

It started in the family delicatessen on North Broad St. in Woodbury where he first worked with his parents and his younger brother, Sidney. Alvin graduated from Dickinson College and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. After serving in the United States Navy, he returned to Woodbury and established his law practice with his brother, Sidney – Granite & Granite. In 1960, Alvin was appointed Gloucester County Prosecutor. He was the youngest to hold that post and served ten years. Alvin was involved in the legal community throughout Gloucester County. He served as a municipal court judge in Williamstown and Glassboro; he was the solicitor for Washington Twp. and Gloucester County College. For many years, Alvin served on the Board of Trustees for Underwood-Memorial Hospital.

The law was just one side to Alvin Granite. He was an entrepreneur, an investor and mostly an idea-man. He founded the West Deptford Bank and the Gloucester County Cable Company. Alvin enjoyed travelling. He visited throughout the world – visiting all the continents except Australia and Antarctica. St. Thomas was a favorite vacation. Alvin also enjoyed summers in Florence, Italy as he became an opera expert with his wife, Bonita. On trips back to his wife's home in Iowa, he enjoyed hanging with "the boys" in the local coffee shop. Bonita was Alvin's regular golfing partner at the Woodbury Country Club. Family gatherings were always special with Alvin there. He possessed a great love of people, especially in the Shop Rite and the CVS.

Alvin Granite always had a smile . . . a story . . . or a song for everyone - whether he just met you or had known you for years.
His life's motto came from Puccini's La Boheme – "Addio, Addio, Sensa Rancor" (Goodbye, goodbye without regrets)

Family

Alvin is survived by his wife Bonita (nee Rounds), a professor of music at Rowan University and daughters, Leslie Wagner (David) of Summit, NJ; Barbara Blumberg (David) of Wilmington, DE; Jessica Zuckerman (David) of Cherry Hill; Nicole Orehotsky (Larsen) of Gilbertsville, PA and Abigail Cunning (Daniel) of Woolwich.

There are eight grandchildren, Amy, Andrew, Michael, Jillian, Johannes, Kristina, Adrianna and Cooper.

Alvin was also very proud of his cats, Cio-Cio-San, Lieutenant Pinkerton and Suzuki - named for Madame Butterfly characters.

Funeral services are private. The family would be honored if you would continue Alvin's love of music with a donation to the Alvin E. Granite Opera Scholarship Fund c/o Rowan University Wilson Music Building 201 Mullica Hill Rd. Glassboro, NJ 08028
