September 25, 2012SIOUX CITY | Evelyn Bernice Phelps Hulsebus, 90, of St. Joseph, Mo., formerly of Sioux City, went to be with Jesus Monday, Sept. 17, 2012.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28 at Le Mars (Iowa) Bible Church, with Pastor Fred Gums officiating. The body was cremated. Arrangements are under the direction of Rupp Funeral Home in St. Joseph. Online condolences may be posted at www.ruppfuneral.com.
Evelyn was born Sept. 1, 1922. She grew up in Bayard, Iowa, where she attended school and graduated from high school. She attended college for one year.
She taught school for several years before marrying Lloyd Hulsebus. They farmed for many years in the Denison, Iowa, area. They had three daughters, Eileen, Mary and Becky.
Evelyn liked all kinds of art, especially oil painting and photography. She opened a photo studio and operated it for many years.
In 1972, she moved to Sioux City, and bought a home across from Morningside College. Evelyn's youngest daughter, Becky, attended Morningside, where she met her future husband, Tom. After Becky graduated, Evelyn started renting her home to foreign girls who were college students. She kept a map of the world and put a pin from the home country of each girl who resided in the house.
In 1976, Evelyn went to Africa for a month to visit her sister Reva, who was a missionary nurse. Reva had met and married her husband in Africa, where they made their home. In later years, Evelyn went to Papua New Guinea, where Becky and Tom were missionaries. She enjoyed traveling and seeing other countries.
In her latter years, she sold her home and moved to an apartment for seniors in Sioux City. There she had many friends and enjoyed playing scrabble with them. In 2009, she moved to St. Joseph to be closer to her oldest daughter, Eileen. She wouldn't admit it, but she was beginning to need more help with everything. Evelyn was a member of Grace Evangelical Church in St. Joseph.
Evelyn's greatest accomplishment was that her three daughters accepted Christ as their savior. She did not want anyone to be sad at her passing from this life to the next. Evelyn said she wanted a celebration, because she is now with Jesus.
Survivors include her daughters, Eileen (Mike) Giseburt, Mary (Steve) Neppl and Becky (Tom) Feldpausch; her brother, Eugene (Shirley) Phelps; her sister, Ruth Croft; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
