Evelyn H. Deuel, 95, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at a Sioux City care facility.

Services will be 7 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Fred Penner officiating. Burial will be in Worthington (Minn.) City Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Evelyn was born July 6, 1917, in Sioux City, the daughter of Earl and Angelia (Smith) Deuel. She grew up in Sioux City. In 1937, she graduated from Central High School, where she was captain of the tennis team during her senior year. She attended journalism school at the University of Oklahoma for two years.

She was a charter member of Sioux City's first writers' group, Sioux Writers, in 1942. She published several short stories, poems and one song. She was awarded lifetime membership in Sigma Iota Xi national fraternity of letters in 1939 for her poem, "The World is Too Large." That poem appeared in the publication The Muse of 1942, a book of poetry published annually by Horizon House Publishing Company in New York City. The book was on library shelves in the United States and other countries. Another work of Evelyn's was published in The Muse of 1943. She also sold poems to magazines. She ran a trade publication, The Leeds Reminder, from 1940 to 1944.

Evelyn worked at Sioux City Fur Company. She was the head bookkeeper at Boulevard Foods for 38 years, retiring at 75.

She enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include her cousins, Mary (Jim) Anderson of Sioux City and Judy Bolton of Sioux City.
