SIOUX CITY | Charlene F. Schatz, 89, of Whitesboro, N.Y., formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, after an extended illness.

Services will be at noon Saturday at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams and Edmunds Funeral Home in New Hartford, N.Y. Burial will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park.

Charlene was born Aug. 24, 1922, in Cherokee, Iowa, to Carl and Louise Fredricksen. She grew up in Sioux City. Her father was the longtime president of the Livestock National Bank and civic leader. She graduated from Central High School and Iowa State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics with a concentration in textile chemistry.

Charlene married Frederick W. Schatz on June 30, 1944, in Sioux City. After World War II they settled first in Syracuse, N.Y., and then in Whitesboro, where they raised their three children.

Charlene was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Whitesboro. She was a Cub Scout den mother and supporter of the Girl Scouts. She was a member and past president of her P.E.O. chapter, belonged to the Seed and Weed Garden Club and the Poetry Club of Utica. Charlene was the driving force behind the creation of Sunset Wood Apartments in New Hartford and was president of the board of managers for many years.

Charlene volunteered as a docent at Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute and was active with the Neighborhood Center, both in Utica, N.Y.

Charlene and Fred enjoyed travel, taking their children to many of the national parks around the United States and Canada, and then traveling quite extensively overseas to Italy, China, Germany, Egypt, Mexico, and Guatemala.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Charles F. Schatz of Whitesboro; two daughters and their husbands, Jan and Tom Easterly of Indianapolis, Ind., and Barbara and David Kessler of Eufaula, Ala.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and cousins, Lynn Zerschling of Sioux City and Jim Zerschling of Dallas, Texas.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Alan Herman Schatz; her husband, Fred; her parents; and her brother, Carl Fredricksen Jr.
