Merle Eugene Carr, 74, of Hornick died Sept. 22, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church of Hornick with the Rev. Ed Elliott officiating. Burial will be in the Willow Township Cemetery of Holly Springs, Iowa, with military gravesides Services by Hindman-Steele American Legion Post 492, Hornick.

Visitation will be at 6 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home, Sloan, Iowa.

Mr. Carr was born July 23, 1923, at Holly Springs, the son of Walter and Margaret (Ware Carr. He attended school at Holly Springs.

On April 15, 1950, he married Josephine I. Conger at Sioux City.

He served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945, was decorated with a Purple Heart and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he farmed in the Hornick area until his death.

He was a 50-year member and past commander of the Hindman-Steele American, Legion Post 492 at Hornick.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Darrel "Ed" and Carolyn and John and Kris, all of Hornick; a daughter and her husband, Lori and Tom Hubert of Hornick; a brother, Melvin of Hornick; two sisters, Marian Romine of Onawa, Iowa, and Mary Faust of Del Valle, Texas; and five grandchildren, Holly and Michelle Carr and Dane, Devin and Emily Carr.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Raymond; a sister, Ferne; and an infant sister.
