James H. Penning 1938-2011

James H. Penning, 72, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, May 29, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital comforted by family.

Visitation will be 1 to 7 p.m. today, with the family present at 4 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Burial will be at a later date. Online condolences may be posted at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

James was born Aug. 4, 1938, in rural New Hartford, Iowa, to Henry and Marie (Mayfield) Penning. He graduated from East High in Waterloo, Iowa, with the Class of 1957. James worked with John Deere for more than 10 years in the Waterloo area before entering law enforcement as a career. After serving for 18 years as a police officer in Storm Lake, Iowa, James owned and operated a bar in Wagner, S.D.

He enjoyed drawing, working with wood, cooking and collecting ball caps, pens and eagles. James loved his family and enjoyed being a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Carol of Sioux City; children, Debbie Plum of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Linda Hartley and her husband Tom of Wagner, Cindy Penning of Rapid City, S.D., Jane Williams of Wall Lake, Iowa, Christine Tschumper of Heron, S.D., Heidi Powers and her husband Jerome of Avon, S.D., Cheryl Penning of Waterloo, Connie Burke of Charles City, Iowa, and Shane Penning of Sioux City; a son-in-law, Todd Vogt; and a brother, Henry Penning and his wife Lucy of Waterloo.

James was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sandy Vogt in September 2010; a brother, Don; and two sisters, Esther and Agnes.
