Joyce Marie Greuniesen, 95, of Akron, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, May 29, 2011, at Akron Care Center following a brief illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gerald Feierfeil of Church of the Nativity officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Joyce was born April 22, 1916, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Clarence and Medina (Juergens) Beckman. She moved to Sioux City in 1919 and attended Central High School in Sioux City.

She married Emil Greuniesen on June 25, 1940. He died Sept. 25, 1992.

Joyce resided in Sioux City until 2005, when she moved to Akron. She was a homemaker and loving mother. She enjoyed archery, baseball, crossword puzzles, sewing, reading mystery novels, bingo and jigsaw puzzles.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and the Rosary Society. She volunteered at the church.

Survivors include her children, Sue "Susie" Hatch of Le Mars, Iowa, Grace Nuber of Vancouver, Wash., Patricia Greuniesen of St. Louis, Mo., Nick (Addy) Greuniesen of Sioux City, Teresa Beckman of Chandler, Ariz., Paul Greuniesen of Austin, Texas, and Lucy (Gaylan) Baker of Akron; special family friend considered an adopted daughter, Arlene Shanley of St. Louis; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emil; three brothers; and a nephew, Larry Obermeyer whom they raised as a son.

Pallbearers will be grandson Ben Jacobs, grandson Rob Schoonover, grandson John Greuniesen, grandson Mike Kleihauer, son Paul Greuniesen (representing grandson Robert Greuniesen) and great-nephew John Obermeyer (representing Larry Obermeyer).

Honorary pallbearer will be grandson Bill Lamkin.

Memorial may be directed to St. Boniface Rosary Society, Sioux City Gospel Mission or Akron Care Center, 121 South St., Akron, IA 51001
