Barbara Jeanne (Katherman) Smith, 88, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, June 4, 2011, at her residence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Matthew Miller officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be posted online at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Barbara was born June 25, 1922, to Dr. Charles and Geraldine (Visser) Katherman. She graduated from Central High School in December 1939. She attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill., then graduated from Northwestern University in Chicago.

On Aug. 29, 1946, Barbara married Wrede Howard Smith in Sioux City. He died July 5, 2007, in Sioux City.

Barb was a lifelong active member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as church elder, founded and played in the bell choir and taught Sunday school. She was involved in PEO and her Portfolio Study Club. In 1996, Barb was the recipient of Junior League's Dorothy Eaton Palmer Award. Each year this award goes to a sustainer who has demonstrated outstanding service to the community through her Junior League involvement and community leadership. Some of these activities included being on the board of Morningside College, the "Y" Board, Girl Scouts, the board of Planned Parenthood and the Sioux City Concert Course. She enjoyed playing golf and bridge.

Survivors include four children, Wrede H. "Bud" Smith Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Madison, Wis., Robbie Rohlena and her husband, Ron, of Sioux City, Garry Smith and his wife, Carol, of Sioux City, and Jeanne Tourtellot and her husband, Billy, of Greensboro, N.C.; a brother, Robert Katherman and his wife, Carolyn, of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; a sister, Mary Post of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren, Wrede Smith III, Steve Smith, Jeff Rohlena, Mike Rohlena and his wife Andrea, Beth Boettcher and her husband Bryan, Barbara Jeanne McClellan and her husband Tyler, Garrett Smith, Alex Smith, Emily Thilo and Taylor Thilo; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wrede Smith; and a brother-in-law, Neal Post.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters.

The Smith family would like to give special thanks to Barbara's caregivers, Veronica Scott, Lori Scott, Kathy Keegan and Bonnie Harwood, for their love and outstanding care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to First Presbyterian Church.
