Ellen K. Cosgrove, 83, of Sioux City died Thursday, July 14, 2011, at a local hospital surrounded by her family.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Jerome P. Cosgrove, brother-in-law of the deceased, will officiate. The Rev. Merlin J. Schrad and Monsignor Roger J. Augustine will assist. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes. She was born Feb. 14, 1928, in Sioux City, the daughter of Melvin C. and Mary Gertrude (Hassenger) Harter. She lived in Sioux City most of her life, graduating from the Cathedral Grade School, from Central High School, and then from Briar Cliff College in 1950. She was employed as an operator at Northwestern Bell for two years, and later as a secretary for Mutual of Omaha in Omaha.

Ellen K. married Francis Joseph Cosgrove on June 17, 1950, in Sioux City. When the couple began their family in 1951, Ellen K. became a full-time homemaker.

She was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Parish. She was a volunteer at the Sioux City Public Library and at the Blessed Sacrament School Library. She also volunteered at the St. Joseph Hospital Gift Shop and helped coordinate the funeral lunch program at the Blessed Sacrament Church. She was an avid reader, enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, playing golf, and loved to play cards, mostly in bridge clubs.

Ellen K. is survived by her husband, Joe, of Sioux City; five children, Martha (Jack) Shepard of Windsor, Colo., Frank J. (Cheri) Cosgrove of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Thaddeus E. (Deborah) Cosgrove of Holstein, Iowa, Sarah A. (Ric) Krommenhoek of Sioux City, and Tobias Cosgrove of Sioux City; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin C. Harter; her mother, Mary Gertrude Lennon; her son, Luke Cosgrove; and by her sister, Maureen Soliday.

Memorials in her name may be directed to the Bishop Heelan Schools.
