Rev. Alex T. Washington, 92, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, May 26, 2012, at a local care facility.

Private graveside services will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Roger Madden and Karl Luther officiating, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.

Rev. Alex was born on Dec. 1, 1919, in Boone, Iowa, the son of John and Catherine (Horne) Washington. He attended schools in Boone, and graduated from the high school and the Boone Junior College, prior to entering the St. Paul Bible Institute in St. Paul, Minn., where he graduated in 1943.

He was united in marriage to Joy Staggers on May 12, 1943, in St. Paul. He served United Methodist Churches in Iowa at Nevada, Council Bluffs, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and retired as senior minister of the First United Methodist Church in Sioux City in June 1985. Following his retirement, he served as the interim pastor of five different churches in Sioux City.

He served on the Iowa Conference Board of Evangelism and the Council on Finance and Administration of the United Methodist Church. While in Sioux City, he served on the board of directors of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Easter Seals, the Downtown Kiwanis Club, the Woodbury County Mental Health Center, Morningside College, and St. Luke's Medical Center for 22 years.

He is survived by his wife, Joy; a sister-in-law, Shirley Staggers; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be given in Rev. Alex's name to the First United Methodist Church for Children's Missions.
