Jean H. Econ, 90, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, March 8, 2012, at a local care facility after a brief illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Calvin Chapel at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Matthew Miller officiating. Entombment will be in Logan Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Jean was born Aug. 4, 1921 in Sioux Falls, S.D. She was the daughter of Phillip and Marion (Brown) Houg. She grew up in Sioux Falls and attended schools there. She graduated from Sioux Falls Washington High School and then attended the University of South Dakota, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority.

Jean married Michael R. Econ on Nov. 1, 1941 in Sioux City. He died March 18, 1998 in Sioux City. Michael and Jean owned and operated Coopers Market for many years.

She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church. Jean enjoyed traveling, cooking, reading, playing cards and antiques. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and her dog, Maggie.

Survivors include her son, Steve Econ and his wife Kay of Sioux City, and two grandchildren, Heather and Chris.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Honorary pallbearers will be Verle and Marilyn Jensen, Mary Ellen Lowder, Mary Wilmes and all the others who have touched her life.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, the Siouxland Humane Society or Hospice of Siouxland.
