Winna Jean “Winnie” Dolphin, 89, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at a local hospital after a brief illness.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. today at Morningside Assembly of God with her niece, the Rev. Laurie Rich officiating. Visitation with the family will be the hour prior to the service today at church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Winna Jean was born on May 18, 1923, in Spickard, Mo., the daughter of Oren and Virginia Rose (Edwards) Young. She grew up in Iowa, Missouri and Kansas.

On June 20, 1951, she married Jim Wayne Dolphin in Sioux City. They raised four daughters. Winna worked at Wincharger during World War II, then she moved to Des Moines where she worked as a candy maker. She was a waitress in Boone, Iowa, Yankton, S.D., and in Muscatine, Iowa. In 1970, she came to Sioux City and worked as a waitress and in motel housekeeping.

Winna Jean was often ornery and stubborn, but, she was the kindest and most optimistic person. She will be remembered as a great lady. She enjoyed flower gardening, sewing and cooking. She had an interest in writing and took a writing class at the Siouxland Senior Center. She was a member of Morningside Assembly of God.

Survivors include four daughters, Jacquelyn Stiles and her husband, Donald of Dodgeville, Wis., Virginia Dobesh and her husband, Douglas of Duncan, Neb., Patricia Smith and her husband, Alan of Sioux City, and Shelly Dolphin of Sioux City; a brother, John Young and his wife, Mary of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Jamie and her husband, Dr. Alan Holter, Kent Stile and his wife, Melanie, Nicolas Petty and Christopher Dolphin and his wife, Sarah; and five great-grandchildren, Joe and Ben Holter, Kira Petty, Aubrey and Logan Dolphin.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three brothers, Oren Jr., Robert and James Young; and a sister, Irene Simmons.

Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
