Michelle "Shelly" Derby, 48, of Sioux City passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 16, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, officiating. Visitation with the family will be 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Shelly was born on Nov. 9, 1963, in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of James and Angela (Geisler) Kuehn. She grew up in the Merrill and Salix, Iowa, areas. She attended St. Joseph Grade School in Salix. She graduated from Heelan High School in Sioux City in 1982.

Shelly married Fred Derby in September 1990 and they had one son, Austin. Shelly worked at Bomgaars, Terra Chemical and at a retail store in the Southern Hills Mall.

She was an animal lover and enjoyed cats and dogs, reading and drawing.

Survivors include her son, Austin of Sioux City; her mother, Angela Kuehn of Sioux City; a brother, Gary Kuehn and Louise Verbeski of Sioux City; two sisters, Cindy Camerer and her husband, Mark of Hinton, Iowa, and their children, Jordan Dahl, Morgan Dahl, and Preston Camerer, and Patti Petersen and her husband, Scott of Sioux City and their children, Zac and Jacob Petersen; and a sister-in-law, Jayne Kuehn and her children, Caryl and Jimmy Kuehn.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Kuehn; and a brother, Jim Kuehn.
