Esther Viola (Wink) Whittecar, 96, of Moville died Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Moville United Methodist Church. The Rev. Harold Werley will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy Funeral Home in Moville.

Esther was born on May 27,1916, at her parents' home east of Moville, the daughter of Christopher and Elizabeth (Koetke) Wink. She had been a lifelong resident of Moville and graduated from Moville High School 1934. In 1938, she attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls and taught at a country school for three years. In 1942, she along with two other friends drove to Denver, Colo., and worked at the Remington Arms Plant during World War II.

Esther married L.H. “Spike” Whittecar in February 1944. He died in July 1983. They operated the City Cafe in Moville for 20 years. Esther retired in 1973.

She was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was an active member of the women’s circle and served as secretary for the church council. For the past several years, she had been a member of Moville United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Senior Center and enjoyed tap dancing, cooking and gardening. In 1998, she received the Governor’s Volunteer Award for outstanding services to the state of Iowa.

She is survived by her son and his wife, Dennis and Lori Whittecar of Sioux City; her daughter, Deanna Whittecar of Palm Springs, Calif.; five grandchildren, Jason, Abby, Amanda, Minda and Nick; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephew; and other relatives and friends

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Spike; and eight brothers and sisters
