January 05, 2012

My husband, Jerry L. Hodges, 65, of Salix passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at Touchstone Living Center in Sioux City under the care of hospice. That evening our family gathered around Jerry for a final good-bye.

Services will be 6 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Cathy Brown officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 5 p.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com. Please remember Jerry as you last saw him in good cheer and health.

Jerry and I (Gwen Hodges) almost made it to our 39th wedding anniversary. We had a good life with our children, grandchildren and pets.

I now have wonderful memories. Jerry was our Mr. Fix-it, anything I placed on his desk he could repair. He was the best Sunday omelet maker, which always lured our grown children home. He was a computer geek who was always available for tech support. He enjoyed his friends and co-workers and always embraced the challenges that come from work.

I met Jerry more than 40 years ago after he served in Vietnam with the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). He grew up in Fairbury, Neb., attending elementary, high school and junior college there. He also graduated from Coolridge Technical College in Hastings, Neb. Jerry held many jobs including being a disc jockey, when he was young. We've always had a great soundtrack to our life. Rock on Jerry.

Our family members include our two daughters, Amber Hodges and Amy and her husband, Jeremiah Cook; our granddaughter, whom we consider as our youngest child, Tabitha Hodges; his 93-year old mother, Alice Gibson Hodges, who we love dearly and he called every night; his wonderful sister, Linda and her husband, Garry Swangberg; his daughters from a previous marriage, the generous Jeri Lynn Hodges, and Rhonda and her husband, Doug Bivins; my best friend and sister, Vicki and her husband, Fred Mathiesen; my strong brother, Russel Petersen; our grandchildren, Shelby Hodges and Austen, Ashlen and Kyle; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon "Doc" Hodges.
