SIOUX CITY -- Elaine Johnson, 87, Sioux City passed away Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dave Denzer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa. Condolences may be left online for the family at www.rushfamilycareservice.com.

Jennie Elaine was born Jan. 28, 1924, in McIntosh, S.D., the daughter of Clyde and Emma (Douglas) Rush. She grew up on the family farm near Albaton (Sloan), Iowa. She received her education in rural Fairview Township Schools and graduated from Whiting (Iowa) High School in 1942, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She was baptized, confirmed and married by the Rev. O. B. Anderson at Skien Lutheran Church in Albaton.

Elaine and Charles O. Johnson were united in marriage in Albaton on May 7, 1949. Charles died on Sept. 15, 1992. She moved to Sioux City in 1943 and worked as a telegraph operator for Western Union Telegraph Co. and Cudahy Packing Co. from 1943 to 1950. She worked for the JC Penney Co. as an invoice clerk, retiring in 1989.

Elaine was a 60-year member of Morningside Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Morning Glory Quilters, a lay communion server and a former Sunday school teacher. She was also active in Washington School P.T.A. and Boy Scout and Girl Scout activities. Elaine was an avid walker and fitness advocate.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Steven and Karen Johnson of St. Louis, Mo.; a daughter and her husband, Gail and Collin Cooper of Spring, Texas; eight grandchildren, Charlie and Katie Johnson, Karl (Wendy) and Mark (Lindsey) Albrecht, Kiara, Brenton, Trevin and Jaci Cooper; three great-grandsons, Samuel, David and Nathan; a brother and his wife, Douglas and Doris Rush of Sioux City; two sisters, Harriet and her husband, Bob of Brandon, S.D., and Phyllis DeWolf of Sioux City; three sisters-in-law, Lorraine Rush of Osborn, Mo., Donna Rush of Huntington, Ore., Evelyn Sloboth of Omaha; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Patti Albrecht; a grandson, David Albrecht; two brothers, Robert "Bob" and Wilfred "Bill" Rush; a sister-in-law, Florence (Chuck) Moore; and two brothers-in-law, Al DeWolf and Dan Sloboth.
