SIOUX CITY -- Gladys Lillian Grant, 91, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, at a local hospital.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Augustana Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Del Olivier officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Sunset Park Cemetery, Isle, Minn. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave. Cremation will follow the visitation. Gladys was born Aug. 27, 1920, in Opstead, Minn., the daughter of Peter and Anna (Linstrom) Nelson.

On Oct. 28, 1938, she married Clarence "Kelly" Grant in Isle, Minn. The couple moved to South St. Paul, Minn., where she worked for Winzen Research for six years. She was involved in the making and testing of weather balloons with Neal Armstrong prior to the moon mission. After 17 years in South St. Paul, the couple moved to Sioux City. In 1961, they moved to St. Joseph, Mo., where they lived for 30 years. Gladys returned to Sioux City after Clarence's death on Jan. 7, 1993.

While in St. Joseph, she was a member of the Moila Shrine Ladies Auxiliary and then the Abu Bekr Shrine Ladies Auxiliary in Sioux City. She was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church. Gladys' hobbies were ceramics, candle making and painting on china. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed playing other card games, reading and sewing.

Survivors include a son, Don Grant and his wife, Susan of Vernon, Texas; two daughters, Janet Maxwell of Sioux City and Barb Kelly and her husband, Paul of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Terry Larsen, Cheri (Cliff) Wilson, Tammy (Greg) Eldridge, Tara (Greg) Martin, Kelly (Ken) Perkins, Tammy (Stephen) Carmassi and Kim (Bob) Reams; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Eloise Nelson of Minnetonka, Minn., Rosella Nelson of Isle, and Louise Wahlberg of Columbia Heights, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Marilyn Grant Larsen; two sons-in-law, Martin Larsen and Max Maxwell; her parents; and five brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to Augustana Lutheran Church or Sunrise Retirement Community.
