SIOUX CITY -- Edward C. Boland, 83, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at a South Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding of St. Boniface Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Edward was born Dec. 13, 1927, in South Sioux City, to William and Lillian (Jessip) Boland. He was raised in South Sioux City for 16 years. He also lived in Le Mars, Iowa, and Sioux City. He was married to Alice Dries on Nov. 19, 1949, until 1994.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from March 1945 until Oct. 22, 1947. He was involved in the Atoll bombing in the Pacific.

Edward was employed at Jefferson Smurfit Container Corp. as a shipping and receiving clerk and later on as plant supervisor. He retired in 1986 after 40 years.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. He was also a union representative, a volunteer at Mercy Medical Center for 20 years and a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include four sons, Steve Boland of Sioux City, Tom and Glenda Boland of Las Vegas, Nev., Jeff and Jennifer Boland of Plano, Texas, and Dave Boland of Sioux City; five daughters, Carol and Ken Starch of Sioux City, Terrie Stueber of Sioux City, Vicky and Scott Jensen of Mill Creek, Wash., Deb and Ryan Jackson of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Sandi and Jeff Jaques of Sioux City; two brothers, Dick and Carol Boland of Sioux City, and Don Boland of California; five sisters, Norma and Don Colbough of Minneapolis, Minn., Colleen Johnson of Braham, Minn., Judy and Bob Trippel of Arkansas, Janet and Fred Gustman of Omaha, and Kathy and Dale Nordaune of North Branch, Minn.; 25 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Geraldine; a son, Ronald Boland; a soon-in-law, Chaz Stueber; half-brother, William Carpenter; and half-sister, Bonnie Carpenter.
