SLOAN, Iowa | Howard Glen Dean, 59, of Sloan passed peacefully in his sleep on May 10, 2012, watching a hunting show on T.V.

Private graveside services will be held at a later date in Sloan Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa. Howard was born on May 10, 1953, in Sumner, Iowa, the son of Darrel and Lorna (Harrison) Dean. He graduated from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1971 and graduated from Iowa State University in 1975 with a degree in animal science. During high school, Howard was active in FFA and 4-H, holding high offices in both. He showed several grand champion baby beeves at several county fairs and the Chicago International Fair.

After graduation, Howard was a cattle buyer for Swift and Company in Louisville, Ky., Monfort Pack in Des Moines, and worked at Spencer Foods in Spencer, Iowa, before working for John Morrell. Howard worked for John Morrell for 25 years until it closed.

He was a member of the AFL-CIO 222 union for many years. Howard was an active fisherman and hunter, with a lot of turkey, deer and fish trophies hanging on his walls. He enjoyed the outdoors, his family, his friends and his dogs. He always had a smile and enjoyed having a good laugh.

Howard is survived by his sister, Diana (Danny) Bertram of Shell Rock, Iowa; two aunts, Mrs. E.L. Diz Dean and Mrs. Harold W. Dean; an uncle, Richard (Regina) Harrison; three nephews, John (Serena) Rewerts, Aaron Dean and Jacob Rewerts; a niece, Sierra Rewerts; cousins, Danny (Marcia) Dean, DeLyn (David) Foreshoe, Glen (Judy) Dean, Dody (Curt) Olson; many Dean and Harrison offspring; and his beloved dogs, Sammie and CoCo. Howard surely will be missed.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Darrel and Lorna Dean; his maternal grandparents, Howard and Ethel Harrison; and his paternal grandparents, Glen and Florence Dean.
