SIOUX CITY -- Betty A. Winter, 82, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, May 3, 2012, following a brief illness.

Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, with a vigil service at 5:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Per Betty's request, her body has been donated to science.

Betty was born July 25, 1929, in Sioux City, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Schneider) Schwartzmyer. She grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Trinity High School.

Betty worked at Swift and Company before she met and married Gordon Winter on Aug. 19, 1950, in Sioux City. He died June 13, 2010. After they married, the couple moved to the family farm in Hinton, Iowa, until 1974.

While on the farm, Betty went to nursing school and became an LPN. She worked at St. Luke's for 18 years, retiring from nursing at age 55. Betty was an accomplished artist and operated Enchanted Cottage for a number of years, where she sold her creations. She also enjoyed her retirement years working as a demonstrator for Hy-Vee.

Betty enjoyed many interests throughout her life including raising African violets, raising peacocks, bargain shopping and reading, but her greatest love was art. She was an avid painter, carver, quilter and gardener.

Survivors include her special companion, Del Gamble of Sioux City; four children, Tom (Dorothy) Winter of Fremont, Neb., and their children Matt and Mark (fiancée Michaela Mauseth), Roger (Annette) Winter of Sioux City and their children Chad (Daisy) and Craig (Anne), Randy (Deb) Winter of Sioux City and their children Shawn (Traci) and Nate (fiancé Denise Ferlick), and Susan (John) Crawmer of Panora, Iowa, and their daughter Stephanie (Aaron) Fletcher-Boggs; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Dick Schwartzmyer of Yankton, S.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gordon; a daughter, Amy Louise; and a sister, Theresa Schwartzmyer.
