Darrell "Cope" Copenhaver 1919-2012

SIOUX CITY -- Darrell "Cope" Copenhaver, 92, of Des Moines, formerly of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.

Graveside services will be at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Brooks Funeral Care in Clive, Iowa.

Darrell was born Oct. 25, 1919, in Ponca, Neb., to James and Clara Copenhaver. He was one of nine children. Siblings included brothers, Floyd, Delbert and Jackie, and sisters, Gladys Hutt, Marie Gerdes, Lena Meier, Ella Rustine and Florence Copenhaver.

Cope was employed with Iron Eagle as a welder for 17 years and Tyson Foods for five years as a box maker.

Cope and his wife Evelynn returned to Des Moines in 1999 and moved to Stonecrest in 2007. Cope loved living at Stonecrest and enjoyed all of his neighbors there. He loved watching Fox News and enjoyed playing cards. He will be remembered as a loving husband, stepfather and grandpa.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Evelynn; stepchildren, Donnie Deaton and Richard (Kathy) Belden of Des Moines, and Paula Jo Clancey of Tennessee; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 15 nieces and nephews; 10 great-nieces and great-nephews; and many friends.

The family thanks the staff at Mercy Hospice for the exceptional care of Cope during his illness
