SMITHLAND, Iowa -- Paulyne Alta Lundeen Cleveland, 109, of Loveland, Colo., formerly of Smithland, a gentle, genteel, elegant lady, passed away July 6, 2011.

She was born Aug. 15, 1901, in Smithland, to Charles Peter Anderson Lundeen, immigrant from Sweden, and Ida Mae Smothers Lundeen, who had been born in Saline County, Neb. Paulyne was the seventh of ten children. Paulyne grew up in rural Iowa, attending one and two-room schools until she entered high school. She graduated from high school in Smithland in 1920. Paulyne then enrolled in Morningside College at Sioux City, where she earned a teaching certificate. She taught in the Iowa school system for four years in Monona and Sioux counties.

On Nov. 14, 1925, she and Rex Lemuel Cleveland were married in Sioux City. In 1930, twin children were born to them, Charles Rex and Constance Rae. Paulyne found great contentment and fulfillment in her vocation of being wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining, needlework and in later years was able to do a lot of reading. Small birds like wrens, chickadees, and especially goldfinches pleased her.

Her keen mind enabled her to follow current events and throughout her long life she was able to vote in every election. Paulyne was a Christian lady who empathized with others and felt deeply their joys and distresses. Her words were gracious and well reasoned out, and she was a superb conversationalist and correspondent. Of course, we cannot assess on this earth the extent of her influence.

She is survived by her children, Charles (Kathy) of Drake, Colo., and Connie Ninneman of Loveland, Colo.; two grandchildren, Loren Cleveland (Darla) of Grand Island, Neb., and Lea (Bill) Fultz of Peoria, Ariz.; four great-grandchildren, Thomas Devlin IV (Casey) of Tulsa, Okla., Jonathan Devlin of Afghanistan, Jennifer Cleveland of Wichita, Kan., and Jessica Cleveland of Hesston, Kan.; two great-great-grandchildren, Ryleigh and Drake Devlin of Tulsa, Okla.; as well as three nephews and four nieces.

Family members who experienced death before Paulyne were her husband, Rex on July 4, 1990; her parents; four sisters; and five brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Lifespring Evangelical Covenant Church, Chapel of the Interlude or Pathways Hospice, all in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 2100 N. Lincoln Ave., Loveland, CO 80538.
