Dr. Leonard Cavanaugh passed away in Hornick, Iowa, on September 15th 2001, at the age of 74 years, 5 months and 26 days.

A funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, September 19, 2001, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon with the Rev. Bill Schreiber officiating. Ben Jackson and Kate Huffman were the lectors. Michael Bortscheller sang during the service with Mary Jo Lyon accompanying on the organ. The Eucharistic minister was Michael Bortscheller. Paul Wickert read the reflections.

Dr. Leonard Cavanaugh was born March 19, 1927, at Carroll, Iowa, the son of William and Margaret (Leonard) Cavanaugh. He graduated from Lohrville High School in 1944 and went on to serve his country with the Medical Corp during World War II. In 1950 he married Ellen Maudsley. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1952 with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. He then practiced veterinary medicine in the Anthon, Iowa area from 1952 until 1970.

He became a Kent Feed dealer in 1960 and operated Cavanaugh Feed and Grain in Anthon and Rodney, Iowa, in the 1970’s. In 1973, he bought a feed lot near Climbing Hill, Iowa, and custom fed cattle for several years. In 1981, he became a federal livestock inspector at the Sioux City Stockyards and the Track Veterinarian at Atokad Park.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon and a 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion Hindman-Steele Post #492 of Hornick, Iowa, the Anthon Community Club, and the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association.

Those survivors left to cherish the memory of Dr. Leonard Cavanaugh include one son and his wife, Bill and Susie Cavanaugh of Clear Lake, Iowa; six daughters, Mary Barnes of Colorado, Springs, Colorado, Julie and her husband, Jere Jackson of Rapid City, South Dakota, Colleen and her husband, Fred Bortscheller of LeMars, Iowa, Kerry and her husband, Stan Huffman of Correctionville, Iowa, Beth and her husband, Dr. Peter Jansen of Orange Park, Florida and Molly and her husband, Robert Wickert of Omaha, Nebraska; two sisters, Marcella and her husband Dr. Walter Judson of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Marilyn and her husband, Leo Mullin of Williamston, Michigan; one brother and his wife, Clement and Clara Cavanaugh of Helena, Montana; one sister-in-law, Jean Cavanaugh of Great Bend, Kansas; 20 grandchildren’ one great grandchild and a close friend, Selma Mills of Anthon, Iowa, along with several other relatives, business associates, and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Daniel Cavanaugh, a sister, Sr. Pierre Cavanaugh, OSB, and three brothers, Dr. John Cavanaugh, Paul Cavanaugh and Dr. Clair Cavanaugh.
