Funeral Services Held October 11 For Donald Short Sr.

Funeral services were held for Donald E. Short, Sr., 52, of Cherokee and formerly of the Bronson and Moville area at 10:00 a.m., October 11, 1988 at the Boothby Funeral Chapel in Cherokee. The Rev Jack Hebard, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church of Brunsville, officiated and burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City.

Casketbearers were Troy Renken, Mike Roberts, Steven Smith, Justin Kinney, Kenneth Bolles, Larry Washbburn and David Rasmussen, nephews of the deceased. The American Legion Post #1973 of Sioux City conducted full military rights with the assistance of Scott Kennedy and Spencer Quitt, students of East High School of Sioux City, who served as buglers.

Music was provided by Carol Lee Cline, who sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Goodnight and Goodmorning” accompanied by Mrs. Ardis Kreykes as organist. Organ selections included “Beyound the Sunset” and “The Marine Hymn.”

Donald Edward Short, Sr, was born June 29, 1936 at Anthon to Walter E. and Viola M. Dicus Short. He moved with his family as a child to the Moville-Bronson area where he lived until he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1954. Donald was baptized at and a member of the Anthon Methodist Church and latter attended Sunday School at Bronson Presbyterian Church. He attended school at Grant Township #2 near Anthon, and Bronson Public School. He married Delores Smith May 6, 1956 at Bronson. He had been a resident of Cherokee for the past 12 years, where he was an independent truck driver. Prior to this, he had lived at Marcus. He was a Vietnam War Veteran, serving 14 years in the Marines, with extended tours of Vietnam. Donald was the recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation, three purple hearts and many other honors and commendations.

He was a member of the American Legion, L.A. Wescott Post #2253 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Cherokee. He was also a member of the 40/8 Organization.

Donald died October 8, 1988, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital of an apparent heart attack. He had been in severe ill health for the past six months.

Survivors include his wife Delores of Cherokee; two sons, Donald Jr. and Darrell R of Cherokee; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Diana) Jackson of Fort Lewis, Washington, Mrs. Jay (Denise) Freeman of Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma and Mrs. Walter (Delia) Raemhild of Malmstrom Air Force Base, Great Falls, Montana; nine sisters, Mrs. William (Phyllis) Prather of Gravois Mills, Missouri, Mrs. Tesse (Helen)) Washburn and Mrs. Alice VanLaningham of Sioux City, Miss Frances Short of Anaheim, California, Mrs. Clyde (Joyce) Bolles of Sioux City, Mrs. Everett (Doris) Rasmussen of Lawton, Mrs. Raymond (Lois) Smith of Ida Grove, Mrs. Delores Vest of Yellville, Arkansas and Mrs. Robert (Virginia) Seitzinger of Smithland and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers-in-law, a nephew and a niece.
