11 March 2011SIOUX CITY -- Paul B. McCarthy, 72, of Sioux City passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at a local hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in McCook Cemetery, North Sioux City. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Paul was born July 27, 1938, in Sioux City, to Thomas and Collette (Fitzpatrick) McCarthy. He was raised in the Jefferson, S.D., area. He attended school in Jefferson until high school, when he attended and graduated in 1957 from Heelan High School in Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Army.
He resided in the Jefferson area until his marriage to Norma Rolfes on June 12, 1965, in Sioux City. After his marriage, he moved to Sioux City and had been a resident ever since. Paul was a telephone installer/repairman for Northwestern Bell, U.S. West and later Qwest. He retired in 1999 after being employed with them for 35 years.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. He also was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. He enjoyed spending time on his farm and with friends. He will be remembered for his quick wit, being a Green Bay Packers fan, watching Notre Dame football and being Irish.
Survivors include his wife, Norma of Sioux City; four sons, Brian McCarthy of Omaha, Patrick and Cathy McCarthy of Yankton, S.D., Kelly and Dana McCarthy of Minnetonka, Minn., and Kevin and Carrie McCarthy of Bloomington, Minn.; two daughters, Marcia and Travis Bolton of Liberty, Mo., and Kerry and Bob McNamara Jr. of Sioux City; and 14 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John and Jim.
