SIOUX CITY -- Bernice I. Porter, 86, of Sioux City died Monday, March 7, 2011, at Countryside Retirement Home.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave., with the Rev. Dave Denzer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Bernice was born Oct. 10, 1924, in Hordville, Neb., the daughter of Louie and Sophie (Reed) Blase. She grew up on a farm near Hordville. She graduated from Central City (Neb.) High School and attended beauty school in Lincoln, Neb.

Bernice married Robert D. Porter on Sept. 18, 1949. He died on March 29, 1999, in Sioux City. She was a hostess for the Palmer House Restaurant for more than 20 years. She and her husband also owned and operated the Palmer House Gas Station for many years. She later worked for Younker's Department Store for about 15 years.

Bernice was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. She was a longtime member of Morningside Lutheran Church. She also was a longtime member of the Stable Mates of the White Horse Mounted Patrol. She enjoyed decorating her home for Christmas, which was her favorite holiday.

Survivors include four children, Gail Schoenrock and her husband, Phil of Le Mars, Iowa, Michael Porter of Sioux City, Richard Porter and his wife, Peggy of Sioux City, and Michael Finigan of Corpus Christi, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Jay Porter and his wife, Amanda, John Porter, Matthew Porter and his wife, Chelsey, David Porter, Ann Schoenrock, Katie Schoenrock and her fiance, Dustin Carter, Carrie Book and her husband, Brian, Amanda Finigan, Amelia Finigan, Casey Finigan and Alan Davis; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Lillia and Tenleigh; a sister-in-law, Faye Blase of Olathe, Kan.; and a brother-in-law, Donald Porter and his wife, Alberta of Lincoln, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Virgil Blase; a nephew, Kenny Blase; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Joy, John, Matthew and David Porter, Brian Book and Dustin Carter. Honorary pallbearers will be Ann and Katie Schoenrock, Carrie Book, Chelsey and Amanda Porter, Amanda, Amelia and Casey Finigan and Alan Davis.

Memorials in her name may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or the Abu Bekr Shrine Transportation Fund.
