SIOUX CITY -- Lester P. Hitt Jr., 84, of Sioux City died Sunday, March 6, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. John Pehrson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Lester was born April 23, 1926, in Sioux City, the son of Lester and Berdie (Brewer) Hitt. He grew up in Sioux City and attended Sioux City schools. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in Okinawa for two years.

He married Ruth G. Gasper on Dec. 16, 1944, in Dakota City. He was a lifelong Sioux City resident. Lester worked for Armour and Co. until they closed. He then worked for Floyd Valley Packing Co. and retired from John Morrell. After his retirement, he worked part-time for Prodenco Dental Lab.

He was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon at the church. He enjoyed fishing and traveling. Lester was grateful that he was able to go to Washington, D.C. on a Siouxland Honor Flight in October 2010.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Sioux City; a son, Leslie Hitt of Sioux City; two brothers, Larry Hitt of Aurora, Colo., and Kenny Hitt of Sioux City; and many dear nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna D. (Hitt) Dehan, who died Aug. 10, 1971; his parents; and four brothers, Robert, Dean, Art and Harry.

Pallbearers will be Dave Binder, Ken Beals, Mark Raasch, David Raasch, Jim Kolvek, and Dick Scott.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Siouxland for the care they gave to Lester.
