SIOUX CITY -- Laurel E Shever, 78, of Sioux City, formerly of Correctionville, Iowa, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2011, at the Bickford Cottage Assisted Living of Sioux City.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church of Correctionville, with the Rev Ralph C Shorey III officiating. Burial will be in the Cushing Cemetery at Cushing, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 6 p.m., at the church. The Nicklas D Jensen Funeral Home of Correctionville is in charge of the arrangements.

Laurel Elaine Shever was born May 13, 1932, to Harold and Clara (Goodburn) Demarest of Cushing, Iowa. She married Maurice A. Shever in 1947. To that union four children were born. She lived in the Correctionville area for 30 years. During that time she was a cook at the Eastwood School, and she also played the organ at Grace Lutheran Church.

She later pursued a career in nursing and graduated with her BSN from Briar Cliff College with the honor of Summa Cum Laude. She worked at Mercy Hospital in the Brown Neuro Unit for 12 years and later in Home Health. After being a nurse case manager for Intracore Insurance Company, she retired from nursing and then worked as a secretary for Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux City.

Left to cherish her memory are her four children, David (Jane) Shever of Battle Creek, Iowa, Terry (Pam) Shever of Correctionville, Barbara (Steve) Gray of Moville, Iowa, and Brian (Pat) Shever of Battle Creek, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Gaylen (Myrtie) Demarest; brother-in-law, Bob (Rita) Rohde; nephews and nieces; and many friends.

Laurel was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother, Darrell; sister, Donna Rohde; and nephew, Paul Demarest.
