5 March 2011SIOUX CITY -- Bruce Lewis, 63, of Sioux City passed away suddenly on Wednesday, March 2, 2011.
A memorial service celebrating Bruce's life will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Sunnybrook Community Church, with the Rev. Jeff Moes officiating. Friends and family will have the opportunity to meet one hour prior to the service Sunday at the church. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Bruce was born June 6, 1947, in Burke, S.D., to Perry and Frances (Hornbuckle) Lewis. He received his education in Huron, S.D., graduating with the class of 1966. Bruce earned a bachelor's degree in mass communications from University of South Dakota in 1970. He began his career with KMEG television in Sioux City as a news intern and quickly was promoted into sales.
Bruce married Shirley Hiemstra on Nov. 28, 1981, in Sioux City, and they had two sons, Matt and Adam. At KMEG, Bruce rose to sales manager and eventually general manager of the station before leaving the company in 1998. In 1999, Bruce began a second career with L & L Builders, where he became a partner, president and CEO.
Bruce was extremely active in many civic organizations, clubs, and boards, including the YMCA Board, the Rotary Club, Boys Club of Sioux City, Siouxland Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Siouxland, Master Builders of Iowa Board, Tax Research Conference, Camp High Hopes, and Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed traveling with his family, church activities, Musketeers hockey, hunting, and, especially, his yearly cross-country motorcycle trips.
Bruce is survived by his wife, Shirley of Sioux City; sons, Matthew Lewis of Denver, Colo., and Adam Lewis of Las Vegas, Nev.; father, Perry Lewis of Emerson, Neb.; and sister, Anne Starr of Longwood, Fla.
Bruce was preceded in death by his mother, Frances.
