SIOUX CITY -- Joan Marie Gorman Sutherland, a resident of Boise, Idaho, for 31 years, formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at home with her husband and daughters.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 1500 E. Wright Street, Boise. A reception will follow the service at the family home. Arrangements are under the direction of Summers Funeral Homes, Boise Chapel.

Joan was born Sept. 27, 1933, in Sioux City, the daughter of Edward N. Gorman and Esther Beaulieu Gorman. She was born and raised in Ellendale, Iowa, just north of Sioux City and attended Liberty School, grades 1 through 12. Her parents, Ed and Esther Gorman, owned the local gas station/country store attached to their home.

Joan married Wayne Sutherland at Ellendale Catholic Church on June 11, 1955, and have been life partners for almost 60 years. Together they raised three daughters, Sheri (Ray) Vidic of Juneau, Alaska, Renee Sutherland of Portland, Ore., and Valerie (Mark) Anderson of Lake Oswego, Ore.

Joan was very proud of having helped put her husband through college while at the same time raising their two oldest daughters. She enjoyed a life focused on caring for her family, as well as traveling to more than 30 countries with her husband and family, visiting her daughters and their families in Portland and Juneau, and cherishing her time with her two grandchildren, Travis and Taylor Vidic.

After moving to Boise in 1980, Joan volunteered with the local Welcome Wagon group, she volunteered for many years at Elk's Rehab and had enjoyed a subsequent association with her "Go Go Girls" friends. Joan was an avid bridge player, she loved solving crossword puzzles, reading and watching Boise State football and Duke University basketball with Wayne.

Joan is survived by her husband, Wayne; daughters, Sheri, Renee and Valerie; sons-in-law, Ray and Mark; and grandchildren, Travis and Taylor. Joan is also survived by many dear friends and family in Boise, California and Juneau.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Loren and Pete Casper.
