SIOUX CITY -- Brian C. Schirm, 44, of Sioux City, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, April 3, 2011, at his residence.

A celebration of life service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Russell Senstad officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Brian was born Nov. 28, 1966, in Cedar Rapids, to Charles and Carol (Melhus) Schirm. He grew up in the Cedar Rapids area and graduated from Norway High School in 1985. He later attended the University of Iowa. After college, he returned to the Cedar Rapids area. He moved to Sioux City in 2002 and had been a resident here ever since.

He was employed at MCI as a business conference call trainer. He was also a resident manager at his apartment complex. In 2002, he moved to Sioux City and became the owner of the Paxton Tap in Morningside, a job he enjoyed until the time of his passing.

He was of the Lutheran faith. He was a member of the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple. His favorite pastimes were target practicing, sports cars, collecting memorabilia, electronics of all nature and sharing camaraderie with friends. He supported the N.R.A. and Ducks Unlimited.

Survivors include his mother, Carol Schirm of Cedar Rapids; maternal grandmother, Leona Melhus of Newhall, Iowa; aunt, Kathleen and Bill Stickney of North Liberty, Iowa; an uncle, Kenneth and Sheila Melhus of Papillion, Neb.; paternal grandmother, Zenolia Schirm of Newhall; aunts, Delores and Butch Pickering of Newhall; uncle, Harold and Rosemary Schirm of Pennsylvania; his fiancee, Debbie Hair of Sioux City; and many cousins and very special friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Irvin Schirm; a brother, Jeffery Alan Schirm; grandfathers, Irvin Schirm and Clarence Melhus; stepgrandfather, Fidelis Abodeely; and stepuncle, Phillup Abodeely.
