SIOUX CITY -- Richard Michael Sweeney, 78, of Sun City, Ariz., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, March 17, 2011, at a Sun City hospital.

The body was cremated. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Kevin Vogts officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Richard was born Sept. 11, 1932, in Sioux City. He attended Sioux City Public Schools and graduated from Central High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954.

Richard married Joan Smith on Jan. 7, 1952, in Vermillion, S.D. She died Sept. 16, 2007, in Sun City. He worked as a truck salesman for International Harvester starting in the late 1950s in Sioux City and then in 1985 in Phoenix, Ariz.

Survivors include four children, Michael M. Sweeney and his wife, Nancy of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Debbie Dalton and her husband, James of Knoxville, Tenn., Tim Sweeney and his wife, Michelle of Omaha, and Kathy Daniel of Omaha; his brother, Jack Sweeney of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Shane M. Sweeney, Tim Dalton and his wife, Kristin, Lacey Cates, John Sweeney, Paige Daniel, Brooke Daniel and Taylor Daniel; and four great-grandchildren, Tyler Dalton, Katelyn Dalton, Jackson Cates and Ashlyn Cates.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joan; a son, Richard who died in 1997; and a grandson, Michael Sweeney who died in 2004.
