SALIX, Iowa -- Mary Katherine Hughes, 17, of Salix died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, near Salix from injuries sustained in a auto accident.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, with the Rev. Patrick O'Kane officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Calvary Cemetery in Omaha, with military rites. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Mary was born Dec. 16, 1993, in Omaha. She was welcomed by her parents, Terrance and Catherine. She attended Oakdale Elementary School in Omaha until she completed the third grade, when the family moved to Salix. Mary was a junior at Westwood Community Schools in Sloan, Iowa, where she planned on graduating early so she could continue her career with the Iowa Army National Guard. Mary had enlisted in the Guard in December 2010.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix. Mary was a fun-loving teenager, who enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. She had a special love for animals, swimming, camping, and taking pictures. She was an avid fan of the Nebraska Cornhusker football team.

Mary will be missed by her parents, Terry and Cathy of Salix; her paternal grandfather, John R. Hughes of Omaha; her boyfriend, Derek Strom; and her pets, Banjo, Bo, Lillian, and Phillip.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents; and her paternal grandmother.

The family requests memorials in Mary's name be made to Freedom Park in South Sioux City, the Siouxland Humane Society or Westwood Community Schools.
