SIOUX CITY -- Alice B. Nichols, 78, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at Westwood Nursing and Rehab Center.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Matthew Miller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. with Chaplain Bev Hurni officiating, at the funeral home. Alice was born April 26, 1932, in Climbing Hill, Iowa, the daughter of Paul and Edith (Banta) Dicks. She grew up in Climbing Hill and attended school there. She went on to graduate from Iowa Teachers College and Morningside College.

Alice married Paul Nichols Sr. on Dec. 13, 1957. To this union three children were born. She had lived in Siouxland since 1972. She taught in the Sioux City Community School District for 34 years, retiring in 1995.

Alice was very devoted to her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Erickson and her husband, Ken of Merrill, Iowa; three sons, Paul Nichols Jr. and his wife, Carrie of Mount Vernon, Iowa, Troy Nichols and his wife, Jennifer of Barrington, Ill., and James McClain of Sioux City; a brother, Paul Dicks of Milwaukee, Wis.; a sister, Norma Gregg of Cherokee, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Elissa Meylor and her husband, Matt, Tyler and Beau Erickson, Charles and William Nichols, Joey, Tim and Scott Nichols; and a great-granddaughter, Layla Meylor.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Pauline; and four brothers, Robert, Ray, Lawrence and Merle.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Sioux City Teachers Scholarship Fund.
