31 January 2011SIOUX CITY -- Mary Catherine Diehl, 90, formerly of Sioux City, passed away on Jan. 28, 2011, at Legacy Point in Waukee, Iowa.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Des Moines. Burial will follow in Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a rosary service at 7 p.m., at Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University Blvd., Clive, Iowa.
Mary was born July 13, 1920, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Harry and Olga Gleason. She was united in marriage to Charles Diehl on Feb. 4, 1946. After raising her five children, Mary returned to Briar Cliff and received her teaching certificate. She taught for several years in the Sioux City and Des Moines communities as well as DMACC.
Mary served on the Mercy Nursing Scholarship Committee, was involved with the St. Theresa Altar and Rosary Society, RCIA, was a Girl Scout leader, and volunteered for the homeless. She enjoyed traveling, teaching, reading, tutoring, and working with several charities.
Mary is survived by her children, Kathleen (Bill) Tordoff of Frisco, Colo., Mike (Linda) Diehl of Arvada, Colo., Trish (Jack) Thompson of Aberdeen, Wash., Tom (Michelle) Diehl of Clive, Iowa, and Rob Diehl of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Mike (Karleigh), Amy, Chad (Jen), Matt, Anthony, Michael, and Sally; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Adam and Aidan; and brother, Thomas (Ginnie) Gleason of Ft. Collins, Colo.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; three sisters and two brothers.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa Health Hospice or to Catholic Charities.
