DANBURY, Iowa -- Ed Krueger, 54, of Yokosuka, Japan, formerly of Danbury, died of cancer Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Sloan Kettering Hospital in Manhattan, N.Y.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Danbury United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Liston Township Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Carlsen Frum Post 336 of Danbury. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

Mr. Krueger was born May 21, 1948, in Battle Creek, Iowa, the son of Edward Otto and Alma Ada (Davis) Krueger. He attended Maple Valley High School and graduated with the class of 1966. In January 1968, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he attended Fire Control A School in San Diego, Calif. His first sea duty was on the destroyer Mahan.

He married Tosue "Judy" Niino on July 3, 1970, in Tokyo, Japan. To this union two children were born.

He then attended Fire Control B School from December 1970 to October 1971. He was then assigned to the destroyer USS Stoddert in November 1971 to March 1974, where he served on the gun firing line in Vietnam.

In March 1974, he transferred to the FMAG unit at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where he was made chief in May 1976. He was stationed in Hawaii until December 1977. From March 1978 to December 1981, he was assigned to the Mobile Technical Unit (M27) in Yokosuka, Japan. From January 1982 to November 1982, he attended additional Gunfire Control School on the Mark B6 Radar System in the Great Lakes. While there he became the division head for the Fire Control Branch, coordinating the efforts of five instructors on the Mark B6 Radar System.

From October 1984 to October 1986, he was assigned to the fast frigate USS Knox FF 1052, where he was senior chief fire controlman of radar systems aboard the ship. From November 1986 to October 1988, he was appointed chief of Fleet Training Group in Western Pacific, focusing on radar systems 68 to 86. In October 1988, he was transferred to fleet reserve and retired completely from the Naval Reserve in February 1996.

In 1989, he went to work as a GS-11 for the U.S. Government Weapons Department Code 192 in Yokosuka and was appointed the division head in 2000 as a GS-13. His work included gunfire control radar systems and naval ship repairs.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Tosue "Judy" of Yokosuka; a daughter, Amy Farley of Valldosta, Ga.; a son, Tom Krueger of Seattle, Wash.; a granddaughter, Carissa Farley; his mother, Alma Krueger of Danbury; two sisters, Laurel and her husband, Ken Rubendall of Moville, Iowa, and Lois Krueger of Earlham, Iowa; two brothers and their wives, Fred and Cheryl of Merrill, Iowa, and Randy and Casey of Danbury; and six nephews and four nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father; maternal and paternal grandparents; and a nephew.
