MAPLETON, Iowa -- Velma "Molly" Grell, 79, of Mapleton died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Hornick United Methodist Church in Hornick Iowa, with the Rev. Carolyn Bittner officiating. Burial will be in Liston Township Cemetery, Danbury, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Velma "Molly" Grell was born March 5, 1923, in Larimar, Iowa, the daughter of William and Martha (Kalar) Carter. She grew up and was educated in the Mapleton area. It was there that she met and married Arnold Grell on Feb. 8, 1941.

She worked at Ad Dean Shoe Store as well as the Paramount Cafe. She also served as a baby sitter. She moved to Hornick in 1983, where she continued to care for children. In 1997, she returned to Mapleton to reside.

She was a member of Hornick United Methodist Church and a former member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. She also was a member of Royal Neighbors of America, American Legion Auxiliary and Ruth Circle. She loved time spent in her garden and playing bingo. She also found pleasure in dancing, with a talent for tap dance.

Survivors left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Cora and her husband, Jack Howley of Del Rio, Texas; a son, Arnold "Butch" Grell and his wife, Charlene of Moville, Iowa; a son-in-law, Ron Jacoby of Danbury; a daughter, Sarah and her husband, Rex Persinger of Hornick; a son, Matt Grell of Soldier, Iowa; a son, Willie Grell and his wife, LuAnn of Hornick; a daughter, Katie and her husband, Mark Persinger of Hornick; a daughter, Velma and her husband, Randy Meyer of Hornick; a son, Eddie Grell of Soldier; 27 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harry Carter and his wife, Fern, and Richard Carter, all of Mapleton; and several other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Bonnie Jacoby; an infant son; a granddaughter, Alina Kay Grell; a sister, Rachel Olson; and two brothers, Robert and Harley Carter.
