SIOUX CITY -- Johnnie Joseph "John" Johnson, 64, of Sioux City died following a brief illness Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, at his residence surrounded by his family.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Alan Wicks officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. The body will be cremated following the visitation. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com.

John was born Jan. 19, 1946, in Sioux City, the oldest of 11 children born to Oscar E. and Josephine N. (Albert) Johnson. He was a lifelong resident of Sioux City. He graduated from Heelan High School in 1964. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1969.

He married Phyllis Johnson in 1967, in Sioux City. He was employed as an electro plater at Sioux Plating Co. for 42 years, eventually becoming a manager for the company.

He was devoted to his family, children and grandchildren. He enjoyed camping. He was dearly loved by all and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Scott and Kareen Johnson and Christopher and Melinda Johnson, all of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Jessica, Gracianne, Adam and Lyndsey Johnson, all of Sioux City; three brothers and their wives, Gary and Candy Johnson, Dennis and Rhonda Johnson and Joseph Johnson, all of Sioux City; and six sisters and their spouses, Linda Harshfield, Mary Ann Johnson, Debra Johnson and Camillo Cameros, Candy and Ron Foster, Roxanne and Dennis Christiansen and Cheryl Johnson and Rudy Velasco, all of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Diane Johnson; a grandson, Ryan Johnson; a niece, Haley Jo Johnson; and several aunts and uncles.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ken Maaske, Adam Johnson, Doug Johnson Sr., Ron Simoni, Jeff Kuecker and Karin Maass.

Memorials in his name may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
