SIOUX CITY -- Donald W. Spenner, 74, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, at a local hospital following a sudden illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel Guenther officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Donald was born Dec. 29, 1935, in Sioux City, the son of William H. and Anne C. (Essy) Spenner. He graduated from Bishop Heelan High School in 1953, which was the first graduating class that attended all four years. He then joined the U.S. Air Guard with the 185th and served for four years.

On Sept. 24, 1955, he married Fabiola A. "Fab" Lynch at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elk Point, S.D. He worked for Kaplan Wholesale Groceries for 23 years, Braunger's Institutional Foods as a foreman for 17 years, then for Nutra Turf for six years, retiring in 1997.

Grandpa Don loved spending time with all of his grandchildren. He also loved playing cards and enjoyed fishing, hunting and bowling. He was an avid fan of the Colts and the Hawkeyes and took pride in his yard. Don was proud that he was a 13-year cancer survivor. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a former member of the Teamsters Union.

Survivors include his wife, Fab; five children and their spouses, Bill and Cindy Spenner of Sioux City, Tony and Anitta Spenner of Sergeant Bluff, Mickey and Randy Nelson of Sioux City, Kris and Tony Vondrak of Merrill, Iowa, and Robin and Dave Marx of Sioux City; two sisters, Barb Murray of Fremont, Calif., and Rosie Mikuliez and her husband, Jerry of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren (and spouses), Jeff (Lori) Spenner, Donnie Spenner, Catie Spenner, Rachel Aherns, Stephanie (Dan) Licht, Brian (Carmen) Spenner, Eric Nelson, Jimmy (Nikki) Nelson, Andy Nelson, Melissa Nelson, Joel Vondrak, Ryan Marx, Sara Marx and Cori Marx; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Merv Murray.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters.
