SIOUX CITY -- Alfred K. "Al" Kern, 82, of Sioux City died Saturday, May 29, 2010, at his residence in Reno, Nev. following a brief illness.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Alfred K. Kern was born Aug. 15, 1927, in Sioux City, the son of Robert and Marie (Bohme) Kern. In 1962, he married Gloria VandenBerg in Sioux City. They later divorced. In 1979, he married Phyllis Phillips in Reno and was happily married for 31 years.

He was a Merchant Marine from 1945 to 1957. He owned the Grid Iron and Button Willow clubs in Sioux City. Al ran the Morningside County Club in Sioux City. He was a long time restaurant manager of the Gold 'n Silver, as well as the owner of The Brickyard restaurant/lounge in Reno.

He was a member of the Abu Bekr Shriners motorcycle group in Sioux City, as well as the Police Auxiliary in Reno.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; his children, Alison Kern-LaRoche (Randy LaRoche) of Reno, Valerie (Mark) Burnitzki of Elk Grove, Calif.; and two grandsons, Jacob Kern Ward and Christopher Lucas Ward.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Helene Sturtz and Rosalie Gandy.

He was loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
