SIOUX CITY -- Harold Allan Sturgeon Sr., 78, of Sioux City passed away unexpectedly Saturday, July 31, 2010, at a local hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Greg Hanneman officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

"Al" was born in Sioux City to Harold Nelson Sturgeon and Esther Sturgeon, on Jan. 8, 1932. He graduated from East High School. He worked at Continental Baking Company (Wonder Bread) for 26 years and for the Sioux City School Board for 18 years. During his retirement he drove the St. Luke's Care Van for 10 years.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, bike riding, NFL football, major league baseball, Hawkeye football and basketball and spending time with his family. Al was an active member of the Men's Club at St. John's and The Boys of 68 Club. He loved animals, knew all the dogs in his neighborhood by name and often stopped and gave them treats.

Al was a loving husband to Opal Sturgeon for 60 years and father to Debbie Finnerty of Denver, Colo., Harold Allan "Al" Sturgeon Jr. of Sioux City and Steve Sturgeon of San Diego, Calif. He is survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Bonnie Williams.

Anyone who knew Al enjoyed his contagious sense of humor and his boisterous laugh. We will miss you so much, Al!
