SIOUX CITY, -- John M. Haviland, 71, of West Okoboji, Iowa, formerly of Minneapolis and Sioux City, passed away Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City, with Rev. Ralph Shorey, III officiating.

John Milton Haviland was born March 18, 1939, in Sioux City, the son of H. Vincent and Hazel (Quarles) Haviland. John was raised and educated in Sioux City, graduating from Central High School Following high school, John proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps.

On Sept. 3, 1966, he was united in marriage to Judith Burkett in Sioux City. The couple moved to Minneapolis, where they attended the University of Minnesota. They remained in Minneapolis, where John worked as a manager of government contracts of research and development for 3M. Upon retirement in 2005, the couple moved to West Okoboji, Iowa.

John was a vivacious, outgoing person who loved to talk with everyone he met. As a volunteer, he developed and maintained the Sioux City Central High School Alumni web site. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Haviland of West Okoboji, Iowa; brother, Patrick Haviland of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; sister, Julianna Haviland Fick of Minneapolis; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
