SIOUX CITY -- Jim O. Hughes, 80, of Sioux City passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010, at a local hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Roger Madden officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with family present beginning at 6 p.m., and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Jim was born on March 21, 1930, in Gann Valley, S.D., to Velmer H. and Mabel (Olson) Hughes. He received his education in the Sioux City Public Schools before joining the workforce in the iron trade in 1946.

Jim married Bernice Caskey on Dec. 16, 1950, in Luverne, Minn. He started Hughes Steel Erection Inc. in 1960, working and growing the business until he sold the company and retired in 1995.

He was a member of North Riverside Masonic Lodge 662, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, and he enjoyed his association with the Shriners. Jim enjoyed working on his yard and gardening, along with fishing with his boys and grandsons.

Jim is survived by his wife, Bernice of Sioux City; sons, Michael Hughes of Sioux City, and Jim "JD" Hughes and his wife, Jeanette of Thornton, Colo.; grandsons, DJ and Tony Hughes of Colorado; brother, Vernon Hughes and his wife, Normajean of Sioux City; and sisters, Vila Hilbert and her husband, Fred of Oklahoma, Louise Girard and her husband, Kenneth of Missouri, Ona McSperitt of Illinois, and Nita Ashmore and her husband, Roland of Nebraska.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Velmer and Mabel, and brothers, Ordway, Velmer Jr. and Rodney Hughes.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Shriner Children's Hospital.
