SIOUX CITY -- George Franklin Barclay, 78, of Sioux City died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at his residence.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Merrill Muller officiating. Burial will be in McCook Cemetery, North Sioux City, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. George was born Aug. 24, 1932, near Scenic, S.D., the son of Clarence and Lilly (Coakley) Barclay. As a young child, he moved with his family to South Sioux City, where he grew up and attended school. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1955.

He married Illetta Teague on May 7, 1955, in Dakota City. They made their home in the Sioux City area. He worked at Sioux City Battery, Sioux City Janitorial Service, and ran his own gas station for several years. He worked for more than 29 years at Knoepfler Chevrolet until his retirement in 1994. Illetta died on June 4, 2008.

He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, camping and gardening. He built birdhouses and liked music and playing his guitar with family and friends. He also had morning coffee at Hy-Vee and Harveys.

Survivors include two sons, Franklin Barclay and Darrold Barclay, both of Sioux City; a daughter, Avis and Rick Spidell of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Craig, Trista, Ciara and Troy; four great-grandchildren, Logan, Blaine, Zane and Cayden; and a sister, Nettie and Charles Haase of New Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lilly Barclay; his wife, Illetta Barclay; a daughter, Marjorie Ann Barcley; two brothers, Everett and Ed; and a sister, Oma.
