SIOUX CITY -- Barbara Paine Mahoney, 93, died peacefully at sunrise on Nov. 18, 2010, with her family members by her side.

Private family graveside service will be in Graceland Park Cemetery in Morningside. Barbara's family and friends will then gather noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church at 19th and Nebraska streets in Sioux City for a luncheon and remembrance celebration. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Barbara Mahoney was born in Chicago, Ill., on July 22, 1917. She grew up in Glendale, Calif., with her father, Dr. Norman Paine, her mother, Lola Ferne Katherman Paine and three younger brothers, Lyman, Ned, and Dick. Barbara graduated from Stanford University and was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and president of the Pan-Hellenic Council. At Stanford, Barbara also was inducted into the national Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society.

She met her husband Parnell at Stanford and they were married on Nov. 17, 1938. Barbara and Parnell were happily married for 70 years. Parnell passed away on Nov. 1, 2009.

Barbara moved to Iowa with Parnell where he went into the family business at Sioux City Brick & Tile Co. Barbara came to love the changing seasons and the stormy extremes of the Midwest which she was unfamiliar with in southern California.

Barbara and Parnell raised and are survived by three children. Daniel Parnell Mahoney II resides in Lower Hutt, New Zealand (Dan's children are Karen Heather Wirtz, Tanya Marie McFerrin, Daniel Patrick, and Parnell Alonzo). DPM II is retired from being an associate professor of Biology at California State University Los Angeles. Norman Paine Mahoney is the Co-CEO of Sioux City Brick & Tile Company (Norman's children are Norman Earl, Luella Anne Galan, and Heidi Ferne). Jane Crider resides in Bellevue, Neb., where she is a reference librarian at the Bellevue Public Library (Jane's children are Charles Alexander, Robert Nathaniel, and Catherine Elizabeth). Parnell and Barbara have 11 great-grandchildren.

Barbara and Parnell were each other's light and love. Barbara provided great guidance and strength for her family and friends. She was a person of wonderful friendliness and warmth who will be missed.

In addition to raising three children Barbara enjoyed social contact in the wider community where she was active in PEO, Junior League, Portfolio Club, Bridge Club, and Phi Beta Kappa alumni. She was president of the Sioux Trails Girl Scout Council and the Sioux City Concert Course. Barbara also served on the boards of the Mary Elizabeth Day Nursery and Family Service of America. She was the moderator for the Book Bandwagon television show and supported the Sioux City Public Library well into her 80s. Barbara continued her education and obtained a master of arts degree specializing in gerontology at the University of South Dakota. She played tennis until nearly 80 and read a book or more every week. She and Parnell were members of the First United Methodist Church at 19th and Nebraska streets.

Barbara was preceded in death by her two brothers, Lyman and Richard. She is survived by her brother, E.K. "Ned" Paine of Trussville, Ala.

The family would like to thank the Holy Spirit Retirement Home staff for their loving care of Barbara (and Parnell) over the last several years.

Barbara has requested that in lieu of flowers you make donations to the Girls Scouts of Greater Iowa (please specify that the money be used in the Siouxland area) or the charity of your choice.
